Choosing the perfect mattress for a hotel room
Hotels and hotel mattresses are very different from the ones we usually buy at home. Remember how sweet hotels make you sleep? Although we are used to measuring our comfort with the phrase “like home,” sometimes this method fails. What is it? Why do we fall asleep faster, sleep better, and wake up easier in a hotel room than in our home nest?
The Price of Good Sleep
Hoteliers know very well that the comfort of sleep can not be economized, because the sleepless person will be dissatisfied with everything around him. And since visitors usually come for a short time, it is necessary to leave a good impression, first of all, in providing a comfortable sleep. This is soundproofing of walls, floors, and ceilings, reinforced double-glazed windows, thick curtains, warm floors, quality bedding. But most important is a good mattress that will suit all possible requirements and peculiarities of a person. For this reason, the arrangement of a bed in a hotel is often expensive.
Of course, depending on the class of the hotel, the cost of creating sleeping accommodations for guests varies. Do not expect that the sleep in the hostel and Radisson hotels will be equally good. In the first case, you will find the most practical option, which you will not get bored with. In hostels, where the beds have to go hard because of the flow of visitors, most often working are spring mattresses with Bonnel block and a layer of polyurethane foam on top. There are also medium-hard springless polyurethane foam versions, which are valued for their reliability.
Medium-class hotels usually purchase orthopedic mattresses with independent spring blocks and hypoallergenic fillers. The quality of the spring block greatly affects the comfort of sleep. Unlike simple counterparts where all the springs are located in a single block, in such mattresses, each spring is packed in a separate cover and can move independently of the others. The price of such options varies from $1,000 to $1,500.
But in 5-star hotels, the price for a bed can be up to $5,000 to $6,000. This is a real “space” sleeping world from luxury brands: Tempur, Kamasana, Stearns & Foster – anatomic mattresses that can withstand any weight of the visitor. Hotels use either top-quality independent spring block mattresses or models without springs made of modern materials such as Memory Foam. Combination versions are also often used, where the spring mechanism is supplemented with environmentally friendly layers and an overlay (topper) to regulate stiffness.
What mattresses are used in the world’s best hotels?
The best hotels in the world – Hilton, Marriott, or Four Seasons hotels – offer their guests the most comfortable mattresses. It is interesting that the hotels of Four Seasons are well aware of the impression their bedding makes on their guests: the next day you can order the same model for your own home. A similar service is offered by the chain of W Hotels, which is famous for its mattresses 12 inches thick with more than a thousand insulated springs inside (a usual mattress has about 250 of them).
Both chains offer rooms with beds of varying stiffness. Many Radisson hotels have Sleep Number rooms, where in addition to the choice of bed hardness you can get a combined mattress, where one half is firmer and the other one softer. This is handy if a couple has different preferences.
Hilton Hotels says their mattresses are the best in the world because of the special contoured cutting off the top layer of foam and the proprietary quilted covering, which stimulate circulation and have a massage effect. The chain also sells its own mattresses. Marriott, on the other hand, focuses on height and modern technology. Here guests are welcomed with 13.4 inches high featherbeds filled with polyurethane foam. The same type of beds is used in the Ritz hotels.
There are a number of standard requirements for hotel mattresses.
Sleeping places for hotels must be durable. It is well known that any mattress loses its stated characteristics over time. Even if you have purchased the best available model, on average, after 8-10 years it must be replaced. The simpler the mattress, the sooner it will fall into disrepair. In hotels with expensive models of luxury is very important durability, otherwise, the hotel will go bankrupt on replacing the beds.
Double rooms are the most popular option in all the hotels across the United States and the rest of the world. This is why the hotel managers make sure that the bed is optimized for couples, cuddling mattresses are often preferred over regular models for this reason. Also, the most important reason for them to have double beds in their rooms is that it allows them to have better profits.
Hypoallergenic characteristics of all components of the bed are also an obligatory characteristic of mattresses for hotels. Few visitors will be happy if allergies spoil their rest. And the mattress fillers can cause severe allergic attacks, which are difficult not to notice, and a slight swelling of the mucous membranes, which masquerades as a common cold, but greatly interferes with sleep.
The third pillar on which the comfort of hotel mattresses stands is versatility. Luxury mattresses are designed to be equally comfortable for people without orthopedic problems and those of us with back problems. That’s why a night on the right bed flies by unnoticed.
